XAUUSD lot size calculator.
Gold's contract size, point value and the lot size for your risk. Enter the balance, the risk and the stop in dollars; get the lots, the units and the money at risk with the 100-ounce contract, not a flat $10 pip.
$10,000 account, 1% risk ($100), $5.00 stop on XAUUSD (100 oz, $1 per 0.01): 0.20 lots. At 0.10 lots, the same stop risks $50.
Advanced: contract size, digits, lot step
{"action":"buy","symbol":"EURUSD","sl":20}
The sl is in pips the way the SignalForge EA counts them (SL/TP mode Pips, the default). With position size type Risk % in your dashboard and no lot in the alert, the EA sizes the order itself from your live balance. Use your broker's exact symbol name if it has a suffix.
Formula: lots = money at risk / (contract size × stop distance in price, converted to the account currency). Rounded down to your lot step. Exchange rates: ECB reference rates, refreshed daily, served from our own API; if it cannot be reached the calculator uses a built-in table and says so.
How XAUUSD lot size is calculated
Gold is quoted in dollars and most brokers use a 100-ounce contract. Four steps:
- Money at risk = balance × risk %. $10,000 at 1% = $100.
- Stop in price = $5.00 (gold is already in dollars; no pip conversion).
- Loss per 1.00 lot = contract size × stop = 100 oz × $5.00 = $500.
- Lots = $100 / $500 = 0.20 lots, rounded down to 0.01.
Gold contract size: 100 oz vs 10 oz
Most MT5 brokers use 100 ounces per lot: $1.00 of gold is $100 per lot and a $5.00 stop is $500. Some use 10 ounces; the same $5.00 stop is then $50 per lot, so the lot size for the same risk is 10 times bigger. Check the Specification in MT5 and put the real contract in Advanced.
Point value on gold
| Contract | 1.00 lot | 0.10 lot | $5.00 stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 oz (usual) | $1.00 per 0.01 | $0.10 per 0.01 | $500 per lot |
| 10 oz | $0.10 per 0.01 | $0.01 per 0.01 | $50 per lot |
Worked examples
| Account | Risk | Stop | Loss per lot | Lots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000 | 1% = $100 | $5.00 | $500 | 0.20 |
| $50,000 | 1% = $500 | $5.00 | $500 | 1.00 |
| $10,000 | 0.5% = $50 | $3.00 | $300 | 0.16 |
| $100,000 | 1% = $1,000 | $10.00 | $1,000 | 1.00 |
| $10,000 | 1% = $100 | $5.00 | $50 (10 oz) | 2.00 |
100-ounce contract unless noted. Your broker's contract size and live price are what count.
Gold volatility and prop firms
Gold can move several dollars in minutes, and a $5.00 stop is not the same as a 5-pip stop on EURUSD. Size for the stop you actually use. On a prop-firm account, three gold trades at 1% each can be a 3% floating loss in the same direction, deep into a 5% daily limit before any stop fires: use the challenge planner and leave room for the daily loss.
What the calculator does not include
Spread (often 20-40 cents on gold), commission, swap, slippage and the broker's contract differences. The result is the size for the stop you enter, before those costs.
FAQ
THE GOLD SIZING QUESTIONS THAT COME UP MOST.
How many lots is $100 risk on XAUUSD?
With the usual 100-ounce contract, a $5.00 stop loses $500 per 1.00 lot, so $100 of risk is 0.20 lots. A $10.00 stop is 0.10 lots; a $2.50 stop is 0.40 lots. With a 10-ounce contract, double those numbers.
What is the contract size of XAUUSD?
Most MT5 brokers use 100 ounces per lot; some use 10. It is in Market Watch, right-click the symbol, Specification. The calculator lets you change the contract in Advanced.
How much is 1 pip on gold?
On a 2-digit gold quote one pip is 0.01. With a 100-ounce contract, 1.00 lot is $1 per 0.01 and 0.10 lot is $0.10 per 0.01. The SignalForge EA reads gold pips the same way.
Why is my broker's lot size different?
Because the contract size or the margin rate is different. A 10-ounce contract needs 10 times the lots for the same dollar risk; the calculator handles it if you enter the real contract.
Does my account currency change the gold lot size?
Gold is quoted in USD. If your account is EUR or GBP, the dollar risk is converted with the ECB reference rates, so the lot size moves a little with the exchange rate.
How do I size gold for a prop firm?
Use the challenge planner for the daily and max loss, and leave room for several gold trades in the same direction. A 5% daily limit can be reached with three 1%-risk gold positions before any stop fires.
Does the calculator include spread and swap?
No. The result is the size for the stop you enter, before spread, commission, swap and slippage. Gold spreads are often 20-40 cents, so leave a margin.
How are pips calculated on XAUUSD?
Gold has no single universal pip convention. Check how your broker counts it: with a 100-ounce contract, a 0.01 move is $1 per lot and a 0.10 move is $10 per lot. Enter the same convention your terminal shows in the point field of the calculator.
How much is 0.5 lots of XAUUSD?
0.5 lots is 50 ounces. A $1.00 move is $50, a $0.01 move is $0.50 and a $5.00 stop costs $250. With a 10-ounce contract, each of those numbers is a tenth.
What is 20 pips in gold?
It depends on the convention. If your broker counts 0.01 as a pip, 20 pips is a $0.20 move: $20 per 1.00 lot. If it counts 0.10, 20 pips is $2.00: $200 per lot. Same words, ten times the money, so confirm it before sizing.
