What VPS do you need for MT5? Usually less than VPS marketing suggests. Below: every price verified on the provider's own site on 5 October 2026, the specs one terminal really needs, the brokers that give a VPS away and on what terms, and when you need no VPS at all. What VPS do you need for MT5?

RAM and CPU per terminal

MetaQuotes publishes no fixed minimum: MT5 runs on Windows 10/11 and the hardware it needs depends on your MQL5 programs, symbols and charts. Hosts size it like this: NYCServers rates 2 cores and 2 GB for 1-2 trading accounts and 4 GB for 3-6; ForexVPS.net rates 2 CPUs and 4 GB for 1-3 platforms; the MQL5 VPS gives each virtual terminal up to 3 GB. In our own SFCloud fleet, one MT5 terminal running one EA uses about 0.9-1.1 GB of RAM (measured July 2026). Rule of thumb: 2 GB for one terminal, 4 GB for two or three, more for heavy EAs or dozens of charts.

Location: near the broker, not near you

The VPS should sit in the data centre closest to your broker's trade server. MT5 shows the ping to the connected server in its status bar; ask your broker which city its server is in and rent there. The MQL5 VPS picks the closest of its hosting points for you, and MetaQuotes says 96% of broker servers are reachable from them in under 10 ms.

Windows or Linux (Wine)

MT5 is a Windows program. On Linux it runs through Wine, and MetaQuotes ships its own install script for Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint and Fedora. Linux saves the Windows licence (Contabo, for example, bills Windows Server as a monthly add-on priced by VPS size); EAs that call Windows DLLs are safer on a Windows VPS.

Uptime is your job too

A VPS only helps if MT5 comes back logged in after the host's maintenance and Windows updates. Check whether the plan restarts the terminal for you (TradingFXVPS includes its AutoNotify monitoring and auto-restart on every plan) or plan to check it yourself.

MQL5 VPS VS EXTERNAL VPS

The VPS already inside MT5, and its limits.

Every MT5 can rent MetaQuotes' own virtual hosting: right-click your account in the Navigator and choose Register a Virtual Server. It is not a Windows machine you log into, but a copy of your terminal's working state. What MetaQuotes' help and hosting rules say (verified 5 October 2026):

The latency myth, honestly.

VPS marketing leans hard on “1 ms to your broker”. That matters for high-frequency and tick-scalping strategies — which, if you trade prop firms, are forbidden practices anyway. What is the best VPS for MetaTrader 5?

It depends on what runs on it. EAs bought on the MQL5 Market or signal subscriptions: the MQL5 VPS. Several terminals, DLL-based EAs or other trading software: a Windows forex VPS in the data centre closest to your broker's server. One MT5 that only executes TradingView alerts: a hosted MT5 like SFCloud, with nothing to administer.

Does MT5 need a VPS?

No. MT5 only has to be running and logged in when orders must be placed. If your PC stays on with sleep disabled during the hours you trade, you do not need one. You need a VPS, or a hosted MT5, when EAs or TradingView alerts must execute while your computer is off.

MQL5 VPS or an external VPS: which is better?
