Automating trades around retail sales.

The Census Bureau's retail sales report comes out at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on a date that changes every month, and your TradingView alerts know nothing about it. Here is what the release is, when the next ones are due (verified on the official schedule on 4 October 2026), what the minutes around it do to an automated TradingView to MT5 strategy, and how to pause new entries with a news filter.

What the retail sales release is

US retail sales come from the U.S. Census Bureau, part of the Department of Commerce. The figure markets react to is the Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report (advance monthly sales for retail and food services): an early estimate of what retailers and restaurants sold in the previous month, with the headline total and a breakdown by kind of business, such as motor vehicles and parts. Because consumer spending is a large part of the US economy, the report is read as a gauge of demand.

The advance figure is an early estimate based on a sample, and the Census Bureau revises it in later reports. The most recent advance report, for August 2026, was released on 16 September 2026 (Census Bureau, retail sales, verified 4 October 2026).

When it comes out

The release usually lands around the middle of the following month at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, but it is not a fixed day of the month: always take the date from the official schedule. The same schedule shows, for example, the September 2025 data released on 25 November 2025.

Dates and the 8:30 a.m. time from the Census Bureau retail release schedule, verified 4 October 2026. The full Monthly Retail Trade Report comes out on the same days, with sales at 8:30 a.m. and inventories at 10:00 a.m. UTC times are our conversion: US daylight saving time ends on 1 November 2026. 8:30 a.m. Eastern is a crowded slot: other US statistics are often scheduled at the same minute, so check the whole day in the calendar rather than only the retail sales line.

Why the minutes around it are different

Before the release the market trades a consensus. When the headline, the breakdown or the revision to the previous month surprises, prices reprice within seconds. Around any scheduled release:

  • Volatility jumps, and the first move is not always the one that lasts once the details are read.
  • Spreads widen as liquidity providers quote wider. A market order pays the spread of that moment, and a stop close to price can be taken out by the spread alone.
  • Prices gap. A stop loss is held at the broker, but in a gap it fills at the next available price, which can be beyond your level (slippage).

We do not publish typical pip ranges: they change with every release and every instrument. What matters is that your backtest assumed normal spreads and continuous prices, and for a few minutes you have neither.

What it does to a TradingView → MT5 strategy

  • Your alert does not know retail sales are due. TradingView alerts fire on price, indicators and strategy orders, not on calendar events. A breakout alert on a USD pair, a US index or gold can fire precisely because the number moved price.
  • Seconds matter more. TradingView takes a few seconds to send the webhook. Our part is about 0.5 s median from webhook to the order confirmed by the broker (19 to 23 September 2026, benchmarks), negligible on a quiet minute, not on the release candle.
  • Risk-based sizing assumes a clean stop. With wider spreads and slippage the real loss on a stopped trade can exceed the percentage you set.
  • Pending orders near price can fill in the spike.
  • Prop firm rules. Some firms restrict trading around high-impact news on some account types. Read your firm's own rule; our prop firm automation checklist lists what to check.

How to automate around it with SignalForge

SignalForge's news filter (Trader plan and above) runs on the execution side, inside the EA, so it works whatever your Pine Script does and whichever alert fired. You switch it on and tune it from the dashboard:

  • Window: by default it blocks new entries from 30 minutes before to 15 minutes after each event.
  • Impact level: by default it only reacts to high-impact events. Whether retail sales opens a window depends on how the calendar rates it, so check the impact rating in the calendar before the release. If it is not rated high, include medium impact in the filter or nothing will be blocked.
  • Calendar: event times come from the ForexFactory calendar, so you do not type dates by hand.
  • Currencies: in Auto mode the filter takes the currencies from the symbol of the chart the EA is attached to, so EURUSD picks up EUR and USD events. Gold quoted as XAUUSD contains USD in its name, so Auto mode picks up US releases. Indices such as US500, US30 or NAS100 carry no currency in their name: set USD by hand.
  • Opposite positions: by default, a signal that arrives inside the window closes positions in the opposite direction and does not open a new trade.
  • Fail-open: if the calendar does not respond, the filter does not block. On that day there is no window, so keep your own look at the calendar.
What it does not do

The news filter blocks new entries. It does not close all your positions before the release. A trade opened before the window stays open through the number with whatever stop loss and take profit it has at the broker. If you want to be flat, close it yourself or have your strategy send the close before the window starts.

Signals stopped by the filter appear in your dashboard as FILTERED with their reason, and in the MT5 Experts tab as [NEWS] lines, so after the release you can see exactly what was skipped. Retail sales day checklist

  • Take the date from the Census schedule (next: 15 October 2026, 8:30 a.m. ET), not from habit: the day of the month moves.
  • Convert the time to your broker's server time.
  • Check the impact rating of retail sales in the ForexFactory calendar and set the filter's impact level so the window opens.
  • Look at what else is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. that day; it may need the same treatment.
  • Check the currencies: Auto mode on currency pairs and gold, USD set by hand on US indices.
  • Decide on open positions before the window: keep them with their stops or close them. The filter will not do it for you.
  • Read your prop firm's news rule if you trade a funded or challenge account.
  • On the day, look at the calendar yourself (if it is unreachable the filter lets signals through) and afterwards check the dashboard for signals marked FILTERED.

FAQ

When is the next US retail sales release?

The Census Bureau schedule (verified 4 October 2026) lists the advance report for September 2026 on Thursday 15 October 2026 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, October data on 17 November and November data on 16 December 2026. The date for December 2026 data is to be announced.

Who publishes US retail sales?

The U.S. Census Bureau, part of the Department of Commerce, in its Advance Monthly Retail Trade Report. It is an early estimate of sales by retailers and food services for the previous month, and it is revised in later reports.

Is retail sales always released on the same day of the month?

No. It usually comes out around the middle of the following month at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time, but the day changes: in the current schedule it is 15 October, 17 November and 16 December 2026. Take the date from the official schedule or the calendar, not from memory.

Does SignalForge's news filter block retail sales automatically?

It blocks new entries around events in the ForexFactory calendar that match your impact level and currencies, by default high impact only, 30 minutes before to 15 after. Check how the calendar rates retail sales and include medium impact if needed; on US indices set USD by hand.

Will the filter close my open trades before retail sales?

No. It blocks new entries and, by default, a signal inside the window closes opposite positions without opening a new trade. Positions opened earlier stay open with their stop loss and take profit at the broker. If the calendar does not respond, the filter does not block.
