CPI trading automation: inflation day without surprise fills.

US inflation data comes out at 8:30 a.m. New York time, and a surprise in the number can reprice rate expectations in seconds. Your TradingView strategy does not know it is CPI day. This guide covers what CPI is, the official 2026 dates, why execution degrades around the print and how to keep an automated MT5 strategy from trading into it.

What CPI is and who publishes it

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change over time in the prices that urban consumers pay for a basket of goods and services. It is published monthly by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Markets watch the headline figure and the "core" figure, which excludes food and energy, both as month-on-month and year-on-year changes.

Inflation is what the Federal Reserve is trying to control, so a CPI surprise changes what traders expect from the next rate decision. That is why the release can move the US dollar, US indices, gold and yields within seconds, often more than the scheduled data around it.

When CPI is released (verified 4 October 2026)

The BLS releases CPI at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. Unlike NFP, the day of the week is not fixed: in the remaining 2026 schedule it falls on a Wednesday, a Tuesday and a Thursday. Always use the official calendar.

US clocks go back on 1 November 2026 and European clocks on 25 October 2026, so the UTC and Madrid times of US releases shift in late October and early November. Why CPI hits execution quality

The mechanics are the same as for any tier-one number: in the minutes before the print, liquidity providers widen or pull their prices, your broker's spread widens and depth thins out. When the number lands, the first moves can gap past several price levels.

  • Entries sent as market orders fill at whatever price is available, not at the price on your chart when the alert was evaluated.
  • Stops are converted into market orders when hit, so they can slip beyond their level in a gap.
  • A first move is not the final move. Headline and core can point in different directions, and price can reverse within minutes, which is hard on strategies that chase the first candle.

The size of the effect depends on the broker, the instrument and the surprise; there is no reliable number to put on it in advance.

What CPI means for a TradingView → MT5 bot

  • Alerts fire on the print candle. A momentum or breakout condition that is rare in normal hours can trigger on the CPI candle in either direction, and a reversal can trigger the opposite signal minutes later.
  • Latency does not save you. TradingView takes a few seconds to send the webhook; SignalForge then measured about 0.5 s median from webhook to confirmed order (19 to 23 September 2026). Fast execution of a signal evaluated on a stale price is still a fill in the spike.
  • Several accounts, several fills. If one alert goes to several MT5 accounts, each fills at its own broker's price and spread, so results can diverge more than usual on CPI day.
  • Prop firm news rules can make a single trade in the window a rule breach, whatever its result.

FTMO: on the FTMO Account with the Standard type, you may not open or close trades, including stop-loss or take-profit fills and pending orders, from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after a restricted news release, and "CPI y/y" is on FTMO's list. Positions opened more than 2 minutes before the release may be held. The Swing account type has no news restriction and the rule does not apply during the Evaluation. A breach may lead to termination of the FTMO Account (FTMO FAQ). Other firms word their news rules differently or have none: read your firm's own page and see our prop firm automation checklist.

How to automate around CPI with SignalForge

SignalForge's news filter runs inside the EA on your MT5 account, so it works for every alert you send, whatever your Pine Script does. What it does, exactly:

  • Plan: included in Trader ($14.99/mo) and above, together with Prop Firm Shield, the trend filter and Telegram notifications.
  • Source and scope: it reads the ForexFactory economic calendar and, by default, acts on high-impact events only.
  • Default window: from 30 minutes before to 15 minutes after the event. Signals that arrive inside it do not open new trades.
  • Opposite positions: by default, a signal that arrives inside the window still closes a position in the opposite direction, but does not open the new one. This close-opposite behaviour is a toggle in the dashboard.
  • It does not flatten your account. Positions you already hold stay open with their stop-loss and take-profit at the broker. If you want to be flat into the number, close them yourself or let your strategy exit before the window.
  • Currencies: in Auto mode the filter takes the currencies from the symbol of the chart the EA is attached to (EURUSD gives EUR and USD). Index symbols such as US30, NAS100 or US500 carry no currency code, so set USD by hand for them.
  • Fail-open: if the calendar does not respond, the filter does not block. On the days that matter most, add a second layer with the trading-hours filter (two windows or a map of 48 half-hour slots, set in your timezone and converted to the broker's server time).
  • Visible: a blocked signal appears in the dashboard as FILTERED with its reason, and the EA writes a [NEWS] line in the MT5 Experts tab.
  • Back-to-back releases: other US numbers are sometimes scheduled for the same morning. When several high-impact events fall close together, new entries can stay blocked for longer than a single window: check the FILTERED log before you assume a signal was lost.

Last line of defence: Prop Firm Shield (also Trader and above) enforces a daily loss limit in $ or %, measured on equity against the day's starting balance, plus a profit target. When the limit is hit the EA stops and closes open positions; it rearms at 00:00 broker server time. It does not enforce a maximum or total drawdown, so keep an eye on that yourself or with your prop firm's tools.

CPI-day checklist

  • Note the official dates: 14 October, 10 November and 10 December 2026, 8:30 a.m. ET.
  • News filter on (Trader plan or above), high impact, currencies checked: set USD by hand for index symbols.
  • Decide your exposure into the print: hold with stops, reduce or close, and make sure your strategy's exits do not fire into the window if your firm restricts closes.
  • On FTMO Standard funded accounts, remember that SL/TP fills inside the 2-minute window count as trades.
  • Back the filter up with a trading-hours window: it is fail-open if the calendar is down.
  • After the release, review FILTERED signals and the [NEWS] lines in the Experts tab.

FAQ

What time is US CPI released?

The BLS publishes the Consumer Price Index at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time. The next scheduled releases are 14 October, 10 November and 10 December 2026, which is 12:30 UTC on 14 October and 13:30 UTC on the November and December dates (BLS schedule, checked 4 October 2026).

What is the difference between headline and core CPI?

Headline CPI covers the whole basket of goods and services. Core CPI excludes food and energy, which are the most volatile components. Both are published in the same release at the same time, so a trading window around CPI covers both.

Does the SignalForge news filter close my positions before CPI?

No. It blocks new entries from 30 minutes before to 15 minutes after high-impact events by default. A signal inside the window can close a position in the opposite direction (a dashboard toggle), but your other open positions stay open with their stop-loss and take-profit.

Does the news filter work on NAS100 or US30?

Yes, but set the currencies by hand. In Auto mode the filter reads the currencies from the symbol of the chart the EA runs on, and index symbols such as US30, NAS100 or US500 contain no currency code, so add USD manually.

Is CPI a restricted event for prop firms?

It depends on the firm. FTMO lists CPI y/y among its restricted events: on the FTMO Account with the Standard type you may not open or close trades from 2 minutes before to 2 minutes after it (FTMO FAQ, checked 4 October 2026). Read your own firm's rule before trading CPI with a bot.
