AUTOMATION · UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

Trading script: automate a strategy without writing code.

A trading script is a program that follows trading rules on a chart: it draws, it tests and it can trade. This guide covers the three kinds, the three ways to build one — including the no-code route — and how a finished script becomes live MT5 orders.

The three kinds of trading script.

INDICATOR, STRATEGY, EA

An indicator calculates and draws: a moving average, a squeeze, a signal arrow. It informs. A strategy declares entries and exits under rules, so TradingView can backtest it bar by bar and fire alerts when the conditions happen live. An expert advisor (EA) lives inside a terminal like MetaTrader and places the orders itself.

For automation the chain is indicator → strategy → alerts → execution. The script you write is the brain; the alert is its voice; the bridge and the EA are the hands.

Three ways to build one.

LEARN IT, GENERATE IT, OR ADAPT ONE

Learn the language. On TradingView that is Pine Script; in MetaTrader it is MQL5. The basics take days, the mastery weeks. You get full control and you can read every line that risks your money.

Generate it. A script builder turns plain-language rules into a working script you compile and test on the chart. Our Script Builder writes Pine from natural language and validates it before handing it over, and the AI Pine script generator guide covers that route in depth. The honest trade-off: you should still read what was generated.

Adapt a free script. TradingView and the MQL5 marketplace are full of public scripts. Fast, but read the code before trading it: repainting tricks and hidden inputs live in free code. Once adapted, convert it to trade with Pine Script to EA.

From script to live MT5 orders.

THE LAST MILE IS ALERTS PLUS A BRIDGE

A finished TradingView script trades itself only if something executes its alerts. The bridge does exactly that: the script fires an alert with a JSON payload (symbol, action, size, stops), the webhook reaches SignalForge, and the EA inside your MT5 places the order on your account. Median time from alert to confirmed order in our 19-23 September 2026 measurements was about 0.5 s.

The full setup — account, EA, webhook URL, demo test — is in how to copy TradingView signals into MT5, and the base connection in connect TradingView to MT5. Size every script’s trades with the lot size calculator before the first live alert.

What is a trading script?

+
A program that follows trading rules on a chart. Three kinds: an indicator (draws or calculates), a strategy (declares entries and exits so it can be backtested and fire alerts), and an expert advisor or EA (places orders in a terminal like MetaTrader without you at the keyboard).

Do I need to know how to code to build one?

+
Not anymore. No-code and AI script builders turn plain-language rules into a working script you can test on the chart. Learning the language still helps you read and adjust the result, but it is no longer the entry ticket.

How long does it take to build a trading script?

+
With a script builder, minutes: you describe the rules, get the script, compile it on TradingView and test it. By hand, expect days for a first working version plus weeks of iteration. The real time sink in both cases is testing the rule, not writing it.

How does a TradingView script trade on MT5?

+
Through alerts plus a bridge: the script fires an alert with a JSON payload, a webhook carries it to the bridge, and an EA inside your MT5 places the order. Median time from alert to confirmed order in our 19-23 September 2026 measurements was about 0.5 s.

Can a trading script lose money by itself?

+
Yes. A script executes its rules without judgment: if the rules are weak, the costs are high or the market changes character, it loses exactly as systematically as it would have won. Backtest with costs, forward-test on a demo, and use risk limits (for example a prop firm daily-loss shield) before going live.
